Happy Birthday Emma!

Have one on us Emma!
Thank you so much for ordering this fantastic and challenging cake from us for your birthday. Your reaction was amazing, I’m so glad you love it! We do lots of birthday cakes for Colgate students, but this one was a real treat. No early am drop off at the mailroom, not this time. This was a late evening delivery at a fabulous tapas joint that we are super happy now that we know about it. La Iguana in Hamilton, NY. I think the owners will be seeing lots of us, the menu looks great. The place looked real cute with the pinata and balloons, and I can just imagine you and your friends with these sombreros on!
Thanks again Emma…Cheers!
PS. Aren’t you glad I refrained from titling my post “holy crap that’s a big cake!”?

I always say inspiration can come from anywhere

Just playing around on polyvore to get some ideas on texture and color combos for possible future cake displays. I’m anxious to get some ultra fabulous faux cakes done to launch at The Genesee Grande Hotel on March 1st at their bridal show. It will likely be the only show I represent a full booth at this season so of course it has to be full of “wow”.
Have you every played with polyvore? I always say inspiration for cakes can come from anywhere, what are you inspired by?

I promise, this will only take a minute of your time! If you wouldn’t mind, please click on the link below and answer 9 quick, easy questions about different design aspects of wedding vendor’s websites.
We won’t record anything about you other than what state or country you are from - we don’t even ask for your email address so no spam or anything like that.
You will likely see this link on lots of other blogs and sites - this survey is being shared all over the blog-o-sphere so please take the survey only once.
If you have additional comments on the subject, please feel free to email me with those and I will share them with the other wedding vendors who are participating! We can’t wait to hear what you have to say!
(If you are a wedding vendor and would like to participate, just copy this post to your blog and email the link to emilie {@} emilieduncan {.} com - I will send you the results once we have closed the survey in March)
Thanks Emilie for letting us copy the post, I look forward to the results too.
A Wedding Affair to remember

This entry is a tad late but I still wanted to share the photos and info with you. On Feb 7th, I took a display cake to the Wedding Affair show produced by Well Wed Magazine that was held at the fantastic Lodge at Welch Allyn in Skaneateles. I’ve long been a fan of Paula and the rest of the folks at The Lodge and had to take part in this event, no matter how small my part would be. I didn’t represent with a full booth, and if you were there as a bride you probably didn’t even know I was there but hopefully you saw and enjoyed my display cake and samples and more importantly I hope you were as impressed with this show and all the amazing vendors as I was. Here are some photos for you to enjoy. The cake is obviously mine; I designed it to go with the Bollywood theme of the night, and the rest of the images are various displays from the night. Even though this event is over, you can check out the Wedding Affair in NY link for more information on participating vendors and content. Thanks Krista and everyone else at Well Wed, and thanks Paula - the ultimate hotess yet again!
Another beautiful inspiration

On January 31st, I delivered Nicole’s wedding cake to The Lincklaen in Cazenovia. I love to go to this Inn for weddings, it is so beautiful and quaint. The cakes are always displayed on a gorgeous credenza in front of a large mirror which means two things for me; one - the cake can’t have a “back”, and two; it’s kind of tricky to pipe borders on site. What do I mean by no “back”? Well, the cake can’t really have any flaws that I can turn to the back. Nicole’s cake had a backside…a stunning recreation of the pleats and buttons down the back to her gown, thankfully it didn’t have a “back” that needed turned out of view.
The main inspiration for this cake was from the graphics from the absolutely stunning invitations they used. I immediately wanted to hand pipe a replica of it on the cake when I saw it the first time. Nicole agreed but opted to have the cake not be completely covered in the design. The bodics of her dress proved the perfect compliment to the graphic nature of the embroidery and so I carved my somewhat signature bodice shape into the top two tiers. The entire cake was brushed with anitque silk and champagne luster dust when finished.
The flowers were done by Nino and his staff at The Backyard Garden Florist in Dewitt. I’m hoping that he’ll share some of his photos in his blog soon from this beautiful day, as I didn’t get nearly enough shots myself. The cake plateau you see under the cake was also provided by Nino. Did you know sometimes your florist may have cake stands? Check, you never know. I didn’t have one that would suit this particular cake but Nicole actually let me know Nino had offered his for use. It was a wonderful compliment to the design.
While I was setting up the cake, the photographer was taking what I’m sure will be gorgeous photos of the bride and groom, I’m anxious to see how they turn out, hopefully I’ll receive one in the mail.
Below are a couple more photos of the cake; one with me in the reflection of the mirror with camera in hand, and my favorite - the most gorgeous close up of the detail on the bottom tier of the cake that was the inspiration for it all.
